Never before have sisters won such a prestigious motor sport event!
Chloé who hadn’t raced for more than three years, had previously not raced a left hand drive car, raced with slick tyres, used a paddle shift gearbox or driven the GP loop at Donington. Chloé returned to spend 30 minutes on Friday acclimatising before qualifying within 1.4 seconds of her sisters lap time. Jade then started the Saturday race from P6 on the grid before working her way through the other competitors. Jade chased this years champion driver Liam Griffin then passed and pulled clear to lead by half a minute before the pit stop. Unfortunately all her hard work was to count for nothing as a problem refitting the detachable steering wheel cost over a minute meaning that fifth position at the flag was a hugely disappointing outcome from a race that was going so well.
For the race on Sunday Jade was determined to try and achieve the sisters goal of finishing on the podium. Jade made a bold move from P5 on the starting grid to try and lead into the first corner. It’s fair to say that Jade’s never say die attitude could almost have won her the first race of next season had her chosen entry speed into Redgate corner on the first lap paid off! However her rear tyres hadn’t read the script and the resulting drift left Jade running wide and scrabbling back onto the circuit. What happened next was almost Senna like, Jade caught and passed 5 cars on the opening lap and came by in second position.
Jade then set after the fast starting Liam Griffin and after a great battle Jade moved into the lead. Jade then handed the Stratton Motorsport Aston Martin GT4 over to her sister Chloé during the pit stops. Tension was clearly visible after the previous days dramas except this time everything went like clockwork. Chloe’s task was to set a good pace and keep a rhythm which she did despite Kieran Griffin trying his hardest to take the win from Chloé.
So the Edwards Sisters triumphed over the Griffin Brothers! Both Liam and Kieran were both very gracious and congratulated Chloé & Jade which was lovely to see. There were huge cheers during the podium celebrations as this was a very popular victory.
This was also Chloe’s first ever race victory and to achieve this in an Aston Martin was very special.
